JOB TITLE: Assistant Parish Maintenance Worker REPORTS TO: Pastor FSLA: Full time; Non-Exempt Employee
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Assistant Parish Maintenance Worker supports the upkeep, cleanliness, and general maintenance of parish buildings and grounds to ensure a safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment for parishioners, staff, and visitors. Working under the supervision of the Parish Maintenance Supervisor or Pastor, this position assists with routine custodial duties, minor repairs, event setup, and seasonal maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to serving the parish community in alignment with the mission and values of the Roman Catholic Church. Given the parish’s large Spanish-speaking population, proficiency in both English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Regular and reliable attendance
Perform routine custodial duties in tandem with contracted cleaning service including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and restroom sanitation to maintain cleanliness in all parish buildings.
Assist with general maintenance tasks, including drywall repair, painting, minor plumbing, minor electrical repairs, and minor roof repairs as needed to ensure facilities remain safe and functional.
Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other equipment for parish events, liturgies, and community functions.
Monitor and report any maintenance or safety issues to the Parish Maintenance Supervisor or Pastor in a timely manner.
Maintain exterior areas of the property including sidewalks, parking lots, landscaping, and entryways; perform seasonal duties such as snow/ice removal or yardwork.
Ensure proper use, storage, and maintenance of cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment.
Secure parish buildings by locking/unlocking facilities and ensuring all doors and windows are properly closed at the end of the shift.
Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies in a prompt and courteous manner.
Collaborate respectfully and effectively with parish staff, volunteers, and parishioners.
Communicate clearly in English and Spanish when interacting with parishioners, vendors, and staff, as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Basic knowledge of general building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and custodial practices.
Familiarity with the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs independently or under supervision.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety procedures and protocols.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
Good time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
Ability to work collaboratively with parish staff, volunteers, vendors, and parishioners.
Dependability, discretion, and a strong work ethic.
Ability to communicate clearly in both English and Spanish, preferred due to the needs of a large Spanish-speaking parish community.
Understanding of and respect for the mission and values of the Roman Catholic Church.
